Relaxing in Pokhara

After 9 days trekking to and from Annapurna Base Camp we deserved several days relaxing in Pokhara. I really enjoyed the laid back, local feeling in Pokhara - between the Nepalese locals and the expat community there was a great vibe of caring and lovely people.

I spent several days relaxing in a lovely guesthouse, eating local cuisine, and spending time on the lakefront - watching daily life go by in Nepal.

ABC Base Camp Trek: Day 8 - Upper Sinwa to Jinu Danda

We hiked down from Upper Sinwa to Lower Sinwa and crossed a long bridge before coming to Chamrong for famous chocolate pie. Chamrong was a lovely little village and TIME magazine wrote an article about the chocolate cake from a teahouse - so we had to try! We kept on walking down and reached Jinu Danda where we stayed the night and enjoyed a bottle of red wine and local hot pools! That evening we played games and enjoyed each others company for our last night on the ABC trek.

ABC Base Camp Trek: Day 7 - ABC to Upper Sinwa

Early in the morning all of the trekkers were woken up by the Sherpas to hurry outside and see the amazing clear view of Annapurna! Hamilton and I were blessed to wake up to clear sunny skies for our final morning at Annapurna Base Camp! We could see the surrounding mountains, the glacier and tons of prayer flags flapping in the wind. After breakfast we packed our bags and headed back down to Upper Sinwa which felt like home when we returned. I snagged a hot shower and we relaxed into the evening!

ABC Base Camp Trek: Day 6 - Upper Sinwa to ABC

We reached Annapurna Base Camp on day 6 of trekking!! We began our morning trekking through thick fog and clouds until we reached MBC for a break to rest our legs and have a sip of hot tea and chocolate. For our final push to the top we trudged through thick snow and laughter our way up despite being short of breath due to the gain in altitude. We stopped for a photoshoot by the ABC Welcome Sign before arriving at the local lodge. We celebrated by having lots of hot tea and playing games!

ABC Base Camp Trek: Day 5 - Upper Sinwa to Deurali

After muesli with hot milk and Tibetan bread we headed off into the mountains. We stopped for a hot masala tea and then we were back trekking through the mountains for Deurali, which sits at 3200 meters. We passed running streams, mountain flowers and stunning mountain views. Once we reached the guest house we pulled out heavy blankets and sipped ginger tea and snacked on salty popcorn before hunkering down in the guest house for the evening.

ABC Base Camp Trek: Day 4 - Tadapani to Upper Sinwa

Our 4th day trekking to ABC was the hardest yet! We spent the morning walking through narrow forest tracks before stopping in Ghurjung for hot Masala Tea and a chat with ABC friends. To reach Upper Sinwa we had a long uphill stretch with lots and lots of steps, but when we arrived we were greeted by a lovely local Nepalese lady who ran a cozy and intimate guest house.

ABC Base Camp Trek Day #3 Ghorepani to Tadapani

ABC Base Camp Trek Day #3 we had sunrise on Poon Hill! Our Sherpa Guide, Pasang, woke us up at 5am for the short yet steep hike up to the top of Poon Hill for sunrise with many other ABC trekkers. We grabbed a hot tea from the tiny stand and stood in awe as we watched the sun rise above the Himalayan mountains of Nepal.

After sunset we hurried back down the hill and enjoyed breakfast before packing up and heading off for our third day of trekking. We had a beautiful day of hiking filled with lots of Nepalese prayer flags and stunning views. We had a long local lunch for several hours before heading to our final destination for the day - Tadapani, where we met more new ABC friends!

ABC Base Camp Trek: Day 2 - Ulleri to Ghorepani

Hamilton and I woke up at 6:45 to begin our second day trekking in the Himalayas of Nepal. Within thirty minutes of walking we came across several Tibetan locals selling goods on the trail. We began walking uphill and into the bush past forest and rocky outcrops until we made a stop in Naya Thanti for a chai tea before continuing onto lower Ghoreponi.  We stayed in a lovely inn at the top of the hill with stunning views to the mountains around us. We enjoyed local food and several games of cards with new friends!

ABC Base Camp Trek: Day 1 - Nayapul to Ulleri

We left Pokhara at 7:30am and began our journey to the start of the Annapurna Base Camp Trek. Once we arrived to Nayapul we began our trekking for the first day. We walked through several little towns with children walking around and tiny trekking shops. We stopped for a sip of buffalo curd and later for lunch overlooking the valley below. We spent our first night in Ulleri where we did a bit of laundry and explored a mountain school for local children. After cups of ginger tea and several goes of Rumikub we went to sleep in our little room with yak wool blankets!

Kathmandu

Most of my time spent in Nepal was outside of the major cities and in the mountains, however I did spend several days exploring the streets and sights of Kathmandu. I loved the controlled chaos, colors, and smells of city life in Kathmandu. Around each corner there was something to explore and experience, especially in Thamel, the area where many visitors spend their time getting to know Nepal.
